Van Nelle Factory Rotterdam

visiting this gem of modern industrial architecture

A while ago during the Architecture Month in Rotterdam we took the chance to vist the famous Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam. This has been on our to-do-list since a very long time and I was so happy to have those tickets for a factory tour. And oh my, it really is such a architectural gem.

Give me tea and coffee

It used to be a factory for cigarettes, tea and coffee. The company moved to this then futuristic building in 1931. It features a lot of light and glass facades. It reminded me a lot of the Bauhaus in Dessau ( if you want to see some pictures from me from the Bauhaus, check this here ) , no wonder why.

Unesco World heritage

If you are like me a huuuge fan of industrial modern architecture sites, this is a must do and see. I loved how the space felt and shortly considered renting an office there. The space is now divided and a home to a few companies. In 2014 itthe Van Nelle factory plant site became an Unesco world heritage, well deserved.

toilets with a view

These were the toilets. Pretty modern for the 1930’s. I like the chosen colors for the tiles and the round edges.

On the long hallways, you can see the skyline of the city of Rotterdam. The distance for the workers was cycable but strategically well chosen, because of the access to water, which ensures the transport of the goods.

strong color game

Mostly black, lots of white, pale yellow, terracotta, bright red and some turquoise. And not to forget: quite some concrete grey and lots and lots of shiny silver chrome.

no distractions

See those stairs? Yes, it was kinda confusing at first sight, but actually pretty clear which staircase to use. It was defined by your gender. Yes. Read that again.

recommend 10/10

If you are in the area Rotterdam, Den Haag, Delft, you should go check out the Van Nelle factory. My kids 5 and 7 also loved it. Maybe because it was family day there and we could also participate in two workshop. And guess what? One was about stamping!
